Identifying Local Opportunities

  1. Key West Cracking Down on Vacation Rentals:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/florida-keys/article78566832.html

This article tells the story of someone living in Key West who is a "repeat offender" when it comes to using Airbnb to rent out their home to tourists. The issue with renting to these tourists is that a particular license is required to rent out one's home for fewer than 30 days. The renters in this area are paying heavy fines due to this regulation, and Airbnb will lose some revenue as a result of these laws. One opportunity that comes to mind would be to create some type of company or agency that assists individuals in obtaining the required licenses. Many of the individuals renting might be able to get a license, but perhaps they do not know or understand the details of obtaining one. Or an intrapreneur working for Airbnb would be able to do some similar type of program to help people get their license so the company does not lose out on that revenue.

  2. Here's How Orlando Ranks for Summer Vacation Rentals:

http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/blog/2016/05/heres-how-orlando-ranks-for-summer-vacation.html

The author of this article states that Orlando is ranked #24th in the nation in summer vacation rentals. She also shows that vacation rentals through services such as Airbnb are, on average, 18% cheaper than a comparable hotel. Airbnb is causing an enormous disruption in the industry for vacation accommodations, which will continue to decrease hotel revenues as the vacation rentals grow and gain popularity. For people living in these top vacation spots, it would be a great opportunity to gain some extra income by offering their extra properties or rooms for rent through Airbnb. I've used Airbnb quite a few times myself, and have seen many instances where one's entire mortgage is being paid off by Airbnb rentals alone. If you aren't one of those people fortunate enough to have multiple properties, obviously there are some negative aspects of renting out your extra rooms to strangers, but if you're the type of person who would not mind living that type of lifestyle in exchange for a steady stream of income for practically no work, then this growth in vacation rentals is a great opportunity for you.

  3. Number of South Florida Million Dollar Homes Nearly Doubled Since 2012:

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/real-estate-news/article78499407.html

This article doesn't necessarily represent any direct issues since it is simply stating that the amount of million dollar homes in the Miami area is increasing at an unprecedented rate, nearly doubling in only 4 years. The potential issue that I could see from this rapid growth is the real-estate-related service's inability to keep up with demand. I know a few people who work with a company that does virtual tours for homes that are up for sale. For those who are unfamiliar with virtual tours, you know how you can go on Google Maps and go to Street View and basically walk around an area? It's like that, but for a home. These tours allow potential buyers of homes to be able to virtually walk throughout the entire home, instead of driving all over the city just to look at a couple houses, which can be very time-consuming and stressful. Services such as the virtual tour will likely have much more demand than supply in these areas since sellers of expensive homes are more likely to be interested in making the investment in a virtual tour in order to sell the home more quickly.

  4. Struggling to Look Away from the Screen

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/health/addiction-recovery/os-addiction-recovery-struggling-to-look-away-from-the-screen-20160521-story.html

This article shows the increasing rate of Americans, especially of younger age, who are dealing with internet or technology-related addictions. The realization of this as a true form of addiction will increase exponentially in the near future, so there will be a demand for many types of centers that deal with alleviating and helping people overcome these addictive behaviors.

  5. Sanford Burnham's Handoff to UF Driven by Shrinking Research Money:

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/os-sanford-burnham-uf-20160521-story.html

Sanford Burnham is an Institute that relies on government funding in order to fund its scientific research. However, the state funds have decreased drastically and are well below the projected funding they had expected to receive. UF is offering to purchase their Lake Nona establishment for $80 million. This could be a great chance for those who are looking to do scientific research for UF since UF has much better funding opportunities than Sanford Burnham.

  1. Damien,
I don't blame Key West for what they're doing. Airbnb is truly a great way to rent when going out of town, but people also need to be doing it in a legal manner. So many people these days will choose any way out from paying taxes and that's how our country survives. More power to the people that could rent out their rooms for extra cash. I personally wouldn't feel safe because you never know who you're dealing with. As for the younger generation and their technology addiction, it really is sad. The reason it's gotten so bad, is because how easy and accessible everything is on our phones.

  2. Damian, this article is very sad: STRUGGLING TO LOOK AWAY FROM THE SCREEN. Our generation is becoming obssed with technology and that is all they or we think about. I can't imagine how someone needs to attend a center to help them alleviate this kind of addictive behavior.

  3. Damien,
I liked the layout of your post, but I had some trouble finding the points in each that we were supposed to make from the directions, for example you never really clearly stated who had the problem in all of the examples you picked, so it's important to make those concise while still keeping it fluid like your post was. For my post I used bullet points to highlight each of my answers, and while it may not have been as visually appealing as yours, my answers to the questions were pretty clear. SO it's just important to find the balanace there. On a lighter note, I've been thinking about trying Airbnb! I agree it's an awesome way to travel and make money. Overall I liked the articles you picked! They are problems that seem to have practical solutions.
